COGNItiVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY (CBT)
We offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) — an effective, evidence-based approach for addressing a wide host of mental health challenges.
CBT is built on a powerful idea:
Dysfunctional thinking influences mood and behaviour, and is common to all psychological disturbances. When people learn to evaluate their thinking in a more realistic and adaptive way, they experience improvement in their emotional state and in their behavior.
This is called the cognitive model, and it forms the foundation for CBT.
Here’s an example:
Let’s say you wave to your friend at school, but they don’t wave back.
Automatic Thought: “They don’t like me anymore.”
Feeling: This makes you feel upset.
Behaviour: This causes you to not talk to them at recess.
Then later, you see them laughing with someone else.
New Thought: “They like other people more than me. Nobody wants to be my friend….”
But maybe your friend just didn’t see you! CBT helps you notice these quick thoughts, check if they’re really true, and work on the deeper beliefs you might have about yourself, others, or the world. Over time, this helps you build healthier ways to think, feel, and act.
